Turn any projector into an Augmented Reality projector with Lightform.
The Lightform LFC is a small computer with a 3D scanning unit that can be connected to almost any projector. This makes it possible to quickly scan complex scenes and easily map complicated objects.
Lightform was founded in 2014 by Brett Jones and Kevin Karsch. Both of them have years of experience with AR and VR at Disney Imagineering and Microsoft. "Eight years ago, when I worked at Disney Imagineering, I saw a demo of projected AR, the most exciting VR/AR demo I have ever seen", explains Jones. "There was a magical forest covered with projection, with lightning and rain, butterflies fluttering across the scene and a running waterfall. The problem was that the demo cost millions and only Disney could build it. That's when I knew that I wanted to make this technology available everywhere.Lightform uses advanced technology to eliminate the complexity of the projection mapping process. "We believe that projected content is much more interesting than a flat screen because it can be placed over the existing environment," says Phil Reyneri, Design Director at Lightform. "This allows designers to seamlessly combine digital content with existing materials and structures. We wanted to make this tool accessible so it can be used anywhere". Lightform connects to any projector via HDMI and projects a range of patterns. These patterns are recognised by the built-in camera and used to generate a 3D model. Unlike real-time depth cameras such as the Kinect - which offer a similarly low resolution point cloud - Lightform generates a high-resolution mesh in less than a minute. This allows for accurate pixel-level alignment.
The Lightform LFC kit ships standard with a computer, a camera and the Lightform Creator software.
