We often run into this situation: What is the best way to make a complicated lighting system accessible for different user types? For example, bigger locations without a dedicated lighting technician. By connecting an existing system with a Proplex 6-Track DMX recorder is it possible to activate presets by using a regular light switch. In this way, facility managers or other employees can activate specific presets without any technical knowledge. This makes it easy for situations where only a basic lighting preset or work lighting is sufficient.

In order to facilitate this, a Proplex 6-Track Din Rail DMX Recorder and a Luminode 1 can be added to any lighting setup. This setup usually includes fixtures, a FOH desk, nodes and a network switches. The Proplex 6-Track ensures that that NC and NO contacts are being translated into DMX values. The Luminode 1 is necessary to convert DMX to Art-Net.

What else should be taken into account?

  1. It is essential to give a lighting console the highest priority when powering up, this can be configured within the Luminode.
  2. Make sure to create presets in the Luminode’s playback engine.
  3. DMX triggers for these presets need to be configured via Art-Net.
  4. The 6-Track can be installed anywhere in the building where it can be connected with the network through the Luminode.

After switching off the lighting console, control of the Luminode is automatically taken over by the 6-Track DMX recorder. Presets in the Luminode playback engine can now be activated by a simple light switch. When the lighting console is switched on, it immediately takes control of the entire set. This setup provides a reliable solution for different situations.

It also allows the lighting technician the create custom presets at any other time. Someone else can activate the preset when it is needed. This allows lighting technicians to use their own platform, but still simplifies the use of complex lighting presets to end-users.

Other different configurations are possible by using the Luminode. For example, a selection of universes can be made accessible for visiting LDs.
